that's a short rod...what weight are you looking for? how much do you
want to spend? where will you be fishing and for what?

Have you tried looking at the parking area by the trail head of the South Fork
of the Hoh River...?

....most of 'em are GLXs that are a bit longer and heavier, but you might get
lucky and find a Sage 3 wt...but it'll be a 9 footer...

My favorite small assed mountain stream rod is a 7'6" 3wt.

I have a 'boo that's a 6'3" 3wt, better strung with 4wt,
but I find it's just too short for the dapping, mending
and rolling you have to do in those tight places.

What about a "combo rod" - the spinning/fly rod combos, or, simply building a
short, light spinning rod blank as a fly rod? It's not like you're gonna be
casting very far, so if it'll get a 3-5 wt DT out about 20-30 feet and roll
cast, it seem like it would work fine (and about any rod or part thereof can do
that). While there are "commercial" 6ish-foot 4-5 wts out there, there aren't
many, and I'm not sure they'd be any better for your purpose...for example, a
Payne 96 - 6'6" and about a modern 4 - should only run about 5K, if you want to
go that route...

FWIW, Ed Payne designed a very similar series of rods, and they were of very
limited use. Basically, you can get much the same "real world" effect with the
top section of a longer, lighter 2-pc. rod. OTOH, the short Paynes will run
_considerably_ more than the hundred or so these rods run, so if it fits the
bill size-wise, it seems a fair enough price.

Actually, I have made some very good rods by just cutting off the butt
section of some old south Bend's or similar rods...The shorter the rod the
more forgiving of the construction....unfortunately, I gave them all away to
the youth at the club who were learning to fly fish...

So??? I guess I look for an old South bend on Ebay? laughs...

Hell, I'd start at the local charity stores, then tag sales, flea markets, pawn
shops, etc. My experience is that a decent enough 'glass spinning rod to tweek
would run less than $10.00 - less than the shipping would run on a eBay purchase
- and they are as plentiful as, um, Loomii in certain parking lot....as always,
YMMV...
