round bait casting reels

I saw a TV show where they were using round bait casting reels for
bass. Is there any advantage with certain baits for the round style?
What is the advantage of this type of reel?

In the bass world, there really is no real difference, it is more a matter
of personal preference, fishing style and comfort. However, when you get
into the larger species like salmon, muskies and sturgeon, then round reels
rule because of the larger gear sets and drag systems.

Until the past few years, the manufacturer's didn't know how to build
strong high speed reels on a low profile frame. There just isn't enough
room for a big enough drive gear in the low profile case. But when it
finally occurred to them to hang a full sized gear box down past the
reel seat level on the side of the reel, that problem went away, and
there's really no advantage any more.

I like the round reels over the low profile. But my hands are
pro-basketball player size. My favorite is a Shimano 251. Also the 5500
Abu's.
