fly rod care
 

I would appreciate some advice on fly rod care. I have a selection of
rods, i.e. Loomis,
Sage, Orvis, T&T, etc., and it's time to clean and store. I recently had
an Orvis rod repaired and
they graciously sent along a tube of ferrule lube....which, unhappily, I
cannot find.

Having 'googled' the subject I get a variety of answers. Obviously,
cleaning the rod is a given, but,
I am getting mixed 'google' advice on what to put on ferrules, whether or
not to wax the rod, and
whether or not to store in the bags/tubes. One guy says parafin is good
for the ferrules, another says
absolutely not! Another says to store in tubes....another not! I would
like my rods to outlive me so
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My better St. Croix rods each came with a small container that has
paraffin for the rod ferules. The instructions with the rod says to
put some on the ferule every so often and insert the ferules together
with a slight twist so that straight grooves are not formed by
straight insertion of the ferules together.
It keeps them from sticking together. If rod parts are stuck
together, the rod can be damaged by efforts to pull them apart. The
paraffin, or some other slight lubricating material (my dad always
rubbed the ferule on this side of his nose for a little skin oil) is
better that a damaged rod.

Paraffin is the thing to use on the ferrules. As for as the rods,
check the integrity of the windings, and check the guides for wear.
Repair if needed. If you are super fastidious, wipe them down with a
damp cloth containing a bit of mild detergent. make sure they are
completely dry, and wax them with a good quality car wax. Put them in
their bags and tubes and store in a dry, cool place. Or, if you are
like me, check for damage, paraffin the ferrules, make sure they are
dry and store as above.

On your ferrules, just roll the end on the side of your nose. The
natural oil will do wonders for your wallet!

On your ferrules, just roll the end on the side of your nose. The
natural oil will do wonders for your wallet!

Bad idea. Skin oils are loaded with acids and will corrode ferrules - even
silver ferrules.

Paraffin is the better choice by far. Just keep one of those tiny birthday
cake candles tucked in the bottom of a vest pocket and retreat when necessary.

I am a fishing guide, and I own a good 20-25 fly rod setups....they get quite a bit of wear....

After each trip I normally wipe them down with a wet cloth, and during the trips I normally will use heavy duty tape around the connections....especially on 4 piece rods and spey rods...and then use an oinment on them from time to time...

I never put them back into the tube right away, and will leave them in a dry warm place for a couple of days before storage...
