West or East, doesn't matter to me, use the same set up.
ADG Titan 9' 5wt - 499.00 http://www.adgfish.com/ Bass Pro White River Classic reel WRC2R - listed at 139, but buy it in the store for 99. http://www.basspro.com Scientific Anglers Mastery GPX line - everywhere for about 70 bucks. The only thing I would do out East is drop it one size down to the 8' 4wt with appropriate line. Frank Reid |

I wouldn't dream of spending $1K on rod-reel-line [ except, perhaps, if I were one of those dilettantes pursuing billfish offshore ]. Once I get above ......... 150 or so, I can't tell the difference in good vs. bad. Differences in types, flex, stiff, etc.......yeah........but, other than externals, such as trim, it is beyond my capability of detection. For reels, if it has a smooth, reliable drag......what else counts? Lines: floats, shoots, and lasts......what else? Same for wine, for me..... Now.......single malt.....AHA, I can taste that OK. But then, my daily driver is a '79 MGB.......and I sneer at Miata pussies. cheers oz, rapidly becoming hillbilly-ized |

That works east of Hawaii for a few thousand miles, generally. How little and how much east of Hawaii? g. who, while he has never been to the fabled sandwich isles, supposes that east of there covers a lot of turf.....and surf. |

I've fished with a goodly number of the regular contributors here (as well as with many other folks) and have often been impressed by the level of mastery displayed by a high percentage of them. And I think that most of them would grant me (however grudgingly in some cases) a run of the mill competence as well. What I know for sure (and I suspect that most would agree) is that there is no way in hell I could identify any particular brand (let alone model or size) of fly rod, reel, line, leader, tippet or connector in a blind test (not as absurd a proposition as it might sound to those who have never fished the hex hatch here in the upper Great Lakes region). Seriously, how many of you think that you could accurately identify even your favorite component or combination consistently by feel and/ or results alone when interspersed among others? giles who has, over the course of half a century or so, owned copies of well over a dozen editions of huckleberry finn and can attest that between the covers the differences don't amount to half a small hill of ****. |

Although I agree that WAY too much interest is shown in 'brand' and the hype that goes with it, and I do NOT think I could pick out my favorite rod/reel/line combo blind, from a large array of similar rods, I DO think I could eliminate a great many combos in such a test as certainly NOT being my pet one. An experience jumps to mind: last season my wife was given a new 4 wt Scott of moderate action by, ah, me. One day she got all tangled up and I handed her my 4 wt Sage XP saying "here use this and I'll re- rig yours" About 6 false cast tries later she brought the fast action Sage back saying " I can't get this thing to cast at all, I HATE it" I was surprised because I think both rods are pretty darn nice, but prefer the Sage for most use. My point, NO way my beginner wife could have picked her Scott out a group of rods with 'similar' action, but she clearly could tell a difference between sticks of the same wt, even as a newbie. |

I find that I prefer my Sage rods -I have several of them and I prefer them over similar wts of Orvis & Thomas & Thomas rods. I find that I can cast easier & more accurately with the Sage rods Lamson reels are fine and altho not at the top of the line they are addordable and rugged. I do believe in many cases & for the most part, with instruments and various tools, You do get what you pay for Fred |

I guess, on reflection, that my point was not that: quality did not make a difference, but, rather that: beyond a certain point, I (me, and only me) cannot see any differences. A fine roofing hammer will do a fine job, but a gold plated one will not do a better job. My best rod was a 6 1/2 ft. glass Phillipson -- soft as silk, and could cast amazing distances with 1970's lines. [ useless for steelhead, of course, and scared the **** out of me when I got into a big dolly on the upper Selway ] Glad we have choices. cheers oz |
