TR - 'blind' fishing today in Ca
I got out a bit today, not far at all from my home, but still out
I fished here ...notice the historic covered bridge ... 1862, I believe http://www.kimshew.com/stan1.jpg and hooked a few small trout during a brief baetis hatch. Being an idiot, I had left both my "fishing sun glasses" and my HatEye cheaters mounted on a Tilley hat in the truck. Trust me tying on #20 flies when you can barely see the fly let alone the eye of it is a real challenge G The reason I left them was because I read this morning that most of us don't get anywhere near enough Vitamin D, what with sitting inside in front of monitors and using sun screen. So I elected to wear a ball cap to get more sun. My normal routine includes breaking out the Tilley and my special bifocal specs from the same stash of fishing stuff. Conclusion ... reading may be bad for fly fishing !!! I also explored another stretch of water and passed this on the way http://www.kimshew.com/stan2.jpg This section looks completely different doesn't it http://www.kimshew.com/stan3.jpg but the two areas are very close together, right where foothill becomes valley and I parked between them, only a short walk from both whole hillsides were covered with popping poppies and other Spring blooms ... I picked a close view of the state flower for this http://www.kimshew.com/poppy.jpg nice couple hours appreciating home |

I also explored another stretch of water and passed this on the way http://www.kimshew.com/stan2.jpg A couple of different groups of deer feed in our back yard every morning and evening. There is a group of 4 - all female - that are the most frequent visitors. We call them "Black Stripe" because the youngest has a black strip down the center of its back. The leader of this pack has a big scar down the center of her back - about 10 inches long - leading to her tail. She also has what looks like claw mark midway on the left side of her back. They look just like claw marks and I have asked around if mountain lions (cougars, pumas) have ever been seen in the area. The answer from several folks is, yes, they have been observed. I know they're in the Smokys 40 or so miles north of us. So, in addition to the copperheads I have also to be concerned about mountain lions. d;o( Also did a bit of fishing this morning in the rain and cold. Not much happening, but it was good to get out. Why does a Thermos of hot coffe taste so good while sitting on a rock by a stream in the pouring rain? Dave |

The Lion is a bit of a worry tho. Rob Speaking of which...... The various departments of natural resources (or their analogues) in the upper great lakes region of North America have at long last given up their longstanding policy of automatic denial of reports of Felix concolor in the area in the last couple of decades or so. Seems that the big cat doesn't much give a damn about official reports and policy. So...... What's the latest best guess about the thylocine? I mean, the literature and the official line are clear enough (or, at least as clear as such things are wont to be), but what's the word on the street, as it were? giles |

I know they're in the Smokys 40 or so miles north of us. there is a brand of southern "shooters" (i'll never call them hunters or sportsmen) and their radiohead dogs that are more likely connected to the deer's scars...coyotes or barbed wire perhaps. very doubtful it was a cougar/puma. i've heard the stories of the cats. western carolina university nickname is "catamount"...mountain name for the eastern cougar or mountain lion that once roamed the area. but...i've yet to see any actual evidence of them being current residents of the smoky mountains or blue ridge...no eyewitnesses, no roadkill, no carcasses. i suppose there could be some, but i doubt it. used to be a lot of elk and bison in the area too. wildlife service says: "Lacking definitive evidence of the species' existence, the Service has presumed the eastern cougar to be extinct. It is improbable that a small cougar population persisted in the eastern states for over a century. Most of the confirmed cougar records since 1950 (animals killed, good quality photos/videos, genetic evidence) are known to be escapes of captive origin." So, in addition to the copperheads I have also to be concerned about mountain lions. d;o( you've a lot more to worry about the two-legged beasts in the area than cougars or snakes, imo. Also did a bit of fishing this morning in the rain and cold. Not much happening, but it was good to get out. Why does a Thermos of hot coffe taste so good while sitting on a rock by a stream in the pouring rain? ahhh...it's part of "the great (and wonderful) mystery", eh? jeff |

"David LaCourse" wrote Why does a Thermos of hot coffe taste so good while sitting on a rock by a stream in the pouring rain? for the same reason that crossing the rowan county line on saturday morning, after a week in federal court, makes you feel so free. yfitons wayno |
