OK, I found this bamboo rod on EBay and it says HCH or D on the rod. Now, I
know that HCH converts to DT6, but what the heck is D? And would a bamboo
rod that is rated for DT6 throw a WF6 or maybe WF5? Getting my bamboo
stock built up. :)

~5 wt. level line.

I would suspect it'd cast OK with a WF6, although the rod
might feel a bit "faster". Depending on your casting style and
the action of the rod, you might even be able to get away with
a WF5. Best advice, as always, is to try it and see. :-)

Actually HCH converts (roughly) to a DT7.

D level or 6wt level.

I have limited experience, only owning one 'boo, but mine throws a 6wt dt as
well as a 6wt wf.

IMO, the HCH should handle the 6WF and the HDH the 5Wf and there's a could
chance they could interchange, especially if it is the HDH.

Hate of follow up my own post but hit the send too soon. Several years ago a
friend turned me on to Long Belly WF lines, I like the Wulf series and use
them on a couple of canes.

Both Orvis and Sci Anglers diagree with this chart. My Battenkill is plainly
marked "HDG" WF#6" and Sci Anglers lists "HCH" as DT #7 and "HDH" as DT #6.

dunno George, I'm no expert but the two references i have at home agreed
with it, but it's just the first thing I googled off the web. All that HCH
and HDH is for you old timers anyway, all I ever known is wf and dt ;-) I
think the poster who suggested trying it had it right.

Absolutely. The disagreement in the various charts points out that the
conversion from letter to number is somewhat of an approximation. IIRC, the
letter system was based on diameters, while the number system is based on
weight.

Frank: You are worrying about this **** way too much. Now that you have decided
to become a 'boo gear whore. You may as well go all the way. I don't remember,
but it seems like your favorite reel for these rods in the Orvis Battenkill, if
not then substitute Hardy Perfect for this advice. If you prefer wf lines then
outfit one Battenkill with a Cortland 444 Peach WF line with a WF5F and another
Battenkill with a WF6F. If you prefer double taper lines for your 'boo rods
then fill one reel with DT5F and another with DT6F lines. I kind of like the
double taper lines with my 'boo rods. If you run into a 'boo rod that seems
like it may like a heavier line then just buy another reel and a 7 weight line
for it. don't remember if waldo sells the Battenkill reel or not, but I bet he
would sell you some Hardy Perfect reels and some of the Peach colored Cortland
444 lines. The next time you are thru this area, stop by and I will loan you my
Hardy Perfect with the spare spool that are loaded with Scientific Angler DT5F
and DT6F lines or my old Ocean City reel that has a Cortland 444 DT5F line on
it to try for a few weeks.
