Have you tried noise reduction on the D100? I haven't had any
exposures long enough yet, but plan to soon. I've heard it works
pretty well.

Thanks for the post. I live in the opposite corner of the state (Walla
Walla) and have yet to catch a metalhead w/ my flyrod. I gave it a
somewhat sincere effort this year on the Tucannon River, and a couple
tries on the Walla Walla. But it was the usual balance of water
levels, clarity, fish movement, etc. We had a lot of rain and snow
this year, and some perpetual clarity problems on the Walla Walla. And
the Touc is a heck of a small stream, so it's been a fun challenge in
terms of presentation, small but fast water, brush on the banks, etc.
Anyway, it's some pretty different water than the Hoh. Some day I
dream of getting up to the peninsula and giving it a shot. It probably
won't be this winter (or spring now), but perhaps next year.

regards,
TyKo

I drove over Monday morning and fished the afternoon and Tuesday. The
water was low and gin clear. Monday I walked in to a couple of my
favorite spots in the park, and found nothing in the usual places. One
run has a narrow deep section at the head where the main current is in
the top 3 feet while it looks like there's a quiet spot underneath,
deep enough that you can't see the bottom. I managed to pull 2 fairly
bright 10 pound males out of this spot as it was getting dark. Both
fish jumped several times and put up fine fights. I have pictures of
the first one, one will be posted on ABPF in a few minutes.

Tuesday I woke up at midnight and went out to take pictures of the
mountains by moonlight. Not bad stuff With a practical limit of 30
seconds for the exposure (Too much random noise after that) I had to
push it 3 stops with PhotoShop, but they look OK. Sunrise was nice,
but with no clouds it was fairly simple. Fishing Tuesday was a bust.
I tried all the spots I knew, concentrating on the deeper and more
protected ones, and didn't find a fish. One hell of a nice day though.

Lovely pic. Were you swinging flies for these fish or nymphing?

So, when the top posting starts is it appropriate to continue it, or
better to repair the netiquette faux pas?

Laziness prevails.

In your neighborhood there's no excuse for not catching steelhead,
unless you just don't get out often enough. Don't forget, "Work is
overrated". The Snake downstream from the Grande Ronde, and the Grande
Ronde are usually stuffed with fish in the fall, and they're not so far
for you to drive.

Thanks JR.

I use what I call the "Karsten Rig". It's actually nymphing single egg
patterns. Start with a dink float, also known as a Canadian float, put
a split shot down the leader a bit more than the depth of the water,
then a foot below that the first single egg, Below that about 18
inches another egg, usually a different color. When fishing in the fly
fishing only section of the park you have to leave out the split shot,
so I use weighted eggs up there.

The dink float I use is about 4 inches of 1/2 inch diameter hard foam
with a piece of tubing inserted at each end. The tube enters the
middle of the end, and protrudes from the side about an inch from the
end. The tubes are usually not big enough to get knots through, so you
need to put the tube on the butt section of the leader before adding
the rest. The line is threaded in one end of the float, wrapped around
once or twice, and then comes out the other end. I usually use 8 feet
or so of 20 pound Maxima ultragreen for the butt section, then a foot
of 15 pound below the float, then another foot of 12 pound to the first
fly and 10 pound on to the last fly. The split shot slide against the
15-12 pound knot and don't slide down to the fly. This sounds like it
would be hard to cast, but the only hard part is the split shot. The
haevier it is, the harder the casting.

Thanks Wayne. This was one of 6 shots, and the only one where the fish
was stretched out for a proper portrait.
