I am looking at buying the 4 pc rod to take when I travel. Is this a good
rod. It is a combo for $150. I am getting a #6. I want it to be kind of
universal Bass, Trout, Bluegill. How does everyone feel about this rod?
Thanks,

Kevin

The Premier series are serviceable rods, nothing special, but they'll
do the job.

The Premier is a decent enough rod, but the reel that comes with St Croix's
prepackaged combo is a little tacky. See Cabela's for a better combo of this
rod and one of their reels. The St Croix reel is plastic.
The premier is a SCII blank, which is basically IM7. For around 25 or 30
bucks more the BPS Classic rod is IM7 with much nicer hardware and a
machined reel. Action on the Premier is a little slower than the Classic,
but the Classic has nickel fittings, rosewood reel seat and the snake guides
are visibly higher quality.
Don't get me wrong, I love St Croix rods, but I don't think their Premier
combo is their best effort.

Mark

Hi Kevin,

I've found that St. Croix makes some very fine rods and combo
outfits. Although it's rather difficult to find these rods at a
discount price, some dealers will throw in a few goodies to earn your
business. Percy's Flies offers Gift Certificates of various
denominations, up to $50.00 in value, good for anything that they sell.
You can check out their web site at http://www.percysflies.com/ .
Percy's Flies also offers free shipping to anywhere in the USA.

I was just casting the new St.Croix "Premier" 9' #6 line 4 piece yesterday
for $100USD looking for a powerful 6 weight to put a WF7F bass bug taper for
bass in Florida. That particular rod would not be the best 6 weight for
trout because it is very fast and powerful but I think it would be great for
bass.

We sell that rod with in a "Combo" with an Orvis "Clearwater" disc drag reel
and Airflow line for ~$139USD.

You still need to cast some of these rods yourself or talk to someone in a
fly shop that can "shake/feel" the rod and evaluate it over the phone for
you.
