Went thru wall today to stock up on groceries for next week's fishing trip
with my and grandson--walked thru fishing aisle and found Scientific Anglers
7&1/2 ft leaders priced at one dollar each!
Do leaders age out of use ? They were not overstocked and the girl who
stocks that aisle just said someone told her to mark them down----would sure
hate to loose a great big brown just because i saved $2 on a leader.

Wal-Mart does that every year long about Feb. Clearancing out some fishing
stuff that didn't sell the year before. I pick up some of those leaders
every year. Last week I bought some for 50 cents...helluva bargain. They
proabably haven't degraded all that much being stored inside and out of
sunlight. At least I hope so. :)

I'd buy a dozen, at least. Cut them back to the thicker part and use new
tippet.

Nothing wrong with testing them.

How often to you get the chance to tell people you broke off a 7 pound test
leader on a fish.....?

I have some fifteen pound test leaders circa 1940 if you want 'em.

Original packaging.

How many leaders do you use in a year?

I tie my own bought the upper sections usually last about a season.

I think you'd be fine if you buy a heavy leader and add fresh tippet to
it. That way if the leader is old and weaker, it won't matter.

For just trout fishing, I use maybe three or four leaders a season.
That's probably more than I need to use, but I cannot abide a kinked leader.

I tie them onto a mono butt section with a blood knot. I'll tie maybe
one nail knot, or use one leader link, per season, for ordinary trout
fishing.

Another contributing factor is that I sometimes change leaders according
to conditions, and I throw away the old one. If I'm fishing dries
somewhere like Silver Creek, I'll tie on a long leader -- up to 12 feet.
That would be a lousy leader for my day-to-day fishing in my homewaters,
where I typically just tie tippet onto a 7 1/2 foot leader. If I fished
those homewaters exclusively, I could get by with one leader per season.

I bought some leaders that were marked down to fifty cents at a discount
store a few years ago. When I tried to use them, I found I couldn't tie
a knot in them -- the mono was so fragile that it would break when I
tried to pull the knot tight.

On the plus side, if you want to call it that, at least I discovered
that and tossed them before I actually tried fishing with them.
