Newbie: SE PA flies
I'm very new to fly fishing, as a kid i fished ultralight spinner rods
in the SE PA region. I find myself back in the region again, having just learned a bit about flyfishing last year. I thoroughly enjoy it. I was wondering if anyone might be able to suggest some flies for this time of year for this area. I'm also looking for any resources, websites for SE PA, or NE PA as well. TIA |

TIA .................. *burp* Streamers... *retch* and large bead head nymphs for NE Penna right now. Water is about 41 degrees and the fish are *burp* still sluggish and not fond of going out of their way *burp* to eat. Not like *burp* me! Try Clousers, Matukas, Muddlers, Wooly Buggers and Ghosts for the streamers in size 4 to 8 and large Prince and GH Hares Ear for the nymphs in #10 to 12. Wait until water temp get to 48 to 54 degrees for possible dry fly action. About two weeks away in NE Penna. They say cold for the next few days - will keep the water in the upper *burp* thirties to low forties for awhile. Access: www.delawareriverfishing.com for data. |

I was wondering if anyone might be able to suggest some flies for this time of year for this area. I'm also looking for any resources, websites for SE PA, or NE PA as well. after you've sorted through the belches and the gastronmic advice, I would suggest that you accumulate the following: Nymphs: Yellow Stoneflies #6-10 Hare's Ears #10-20 Wets: Leadwing Coachman #10-14 Hare's Ear #10-14 Dries: Hendricksons #12-14 Red Quills #14-16 March Browns #12 Grey Foxes #12-14 Sulfurs #14-18 Blue Winged Olives #14-18 Midges(grey, olive) #22-24 Elk Hair Caddis (tan,olive)#14-18 Grab yourself some streamers such as Black nose Dace, Marabou Muddlers and Shenks White Streamers in #4-10 and head out. This time of year, the nymphs and streamers will be all you need, the hatches will start in earnest in about 3 weeks. Get to know your local streams and tailor your selection from what you see on the stream. Good luck!! Tom |

There is a free monthly guide called "Fly Fishing Guide" or something like that, free in local tackle shops. It's divided into sections like NE PA, SE pA, etc., and has stream and fly tips for each month, plus a Lefty Kreh article, so on. Charles Meck's book "Pennsylvania Trout Streams and Their Hatches" is a great resource, both for stream info, and for hatch info. Dwight Landis' book "Trout Streams of Pennsylvania" also has lots of great info & maps. Also of interest is Joseph Armstrong's book "Guide to Pennsylvania Limestone Streams". All of these are available in the Bucks Co. library system, or if you're in the D-town area, Dave's usually has them or could get them for you. Also, don't forget that while we have lots of excellent trout streams in the area as well as north and west of us, this area also has outstanding river and small stream smallmouth action all year round. Lastly, if you'd like to hone your flyfishing chops on some beautiful and well-stocked water, you can't do better than contacting Liberty Council BSA and getting a permit for Ressica Falls on Bushkill Creek. Excellent freestone sith lots of pools and riffles and runs, lots of fish, good hatches, open year-round, maybe 1 1/2 hours from D-town. Timothy Juvenal |
