yep. am i correct in identifying the typical north state streams as
primarily "b3" water, with some "a"?

Dicks would be a B3, so would the lower end of Snowbird. The midddle
section where PJ lead us would be a B2. From the pictures I've seen
of Wilsons, etc. I'd say you have some A streams as well.
