Sturgis?
 

Here's a long shot: I will be in Sturgis, SD, this August 9th working at the
bike rally (there for the full 10 days). Is there by any chance someone who
who lives around there and who would like maybe to take a complete beginner
out fly fishing for an afternoon? I have rod, reel and will soon have line
and flies. What I need is some help. Anyone?

While I wouldn't die of shock if you did manage to find a volunteer, that
really is alot to ask. You're much better off finding a course between now
and then, or possibly hiring a guide in your own neck of the woods (Just
tell the guide you're a complete novice and make sure you can be
accomodated). You'll have alot more fun when you get to a destination area
like Sturgis.

I won't be there but some of the small streams and ponds in Custer State
Park have trout.

I remember fishing the Lamar (in Yellowstone Park) about 10 years
ago--in late summer--when Sturgis was just fizzling out.
I heard a great roar. I looked up and saw at least 100 bikes
thundering down the road. The first 4-5 riders where old
farts in their 50's with long gray hair and beards,
wearing Oakland Hell's Angles jackets. I thought I recognized
Sonny Barger at the point. But maybe I was just imagining it.

I also remember thinking that if it happened no more often than
once a year it was cool. Else it would be time for carpet tacks
and guy wires. Ak 47s, even.

We were in Yellowstone about the same time a few years ago. One
afternoon, we stopped at one of the tourist traps and my wife and
kids went inside while I walked our yellow lab, who was still
pretty much a puppy at the time. Then a big group of bikers
came rumbling into the parking lot, and a big tough scary Hell's
Angel looking dude came stomping across the parking lot towards
me -- and then he sat down on the ground and played with my
puppy for a good ten minutes.

i have represented two groups of hell's angels during my career, and
they remain among the most gentlemanly, cooperative, and generous clients in
my memory.

A similar thing happened to me in Grand Teton Park, except the guy
threatened to take my camera away if I snapped any pictures that
would capture license plates on the bikes. I said "no prob", took
a few more pics of the mountains, and we all went happily on our
respective ways...to this day I can't decide if I think it was a
joke, or not. If it was, he was a good straight man.

This thread started out on topic, when somebody made a long
shot yet perfectly reasonable inquiry: he wanted to know if
he might run into any experienced fly fishermen while at Sturgis.

I responded by remembering a thundering line of bikers in Yellowstone (led
by hell's Angel's) so long it took 15 - 20 minutes to pass by.
My response was vaguely on topic, because I happened to be
standing in the water and fishing when all those bikes past by
(and it did make my ears hurt).

Now all of sudden we're debating whether Hell's Angels are nice
puppy lovers or not. I dunno. I remember in Eugene Oregon in 1966
when a bunch of Gypsy Jokers and Devils Disciples came up north
to Oregon, because they were all so wacked out on acid they
couldn't figure out if they wanted to be bikers or flower children.

Didn't take'em long to get right, however. Pretty soon they
were back to their old tricks, cutting off heads and burning
Diablos alive--with lighter fluid. This doesn't have much to do
with fly fishing anymore. But don't make no mistakes about
outlaw bikers. They like puppies just as much as anybody.
Throat slitting gets a good smile every now and then too.

Thanks, that'x good information. I have sent it on to my daughter who
along with her friends at Ellsworth find Rapid City and South Dakota boring.
I'm trying to get her into fly fishing as there is some good fishing nearby.
She's going back to Diego Garcia in a couple of months. I've told her I'd
spring for an 8 wt travel rod if she wanted one. Last time she was there I
bought her a telescopng spinning rod and she did catch a bonefish, a
baracuda and some other unidentifable fish. I would like to vist the place
and fish but it's off limits to civilians. Probably couldn't afford the $30
Halliburgers anyway.
