FF Ames, Iowa
There is not a great deal of water that is fishable in Ames right now.
The central Iowa rivers are still high and brown from the rains last month and so the regular smallmouth fishery is not very good. If the water goes down the South Skunk river north of Ames is reasonable smallmouth country - wouldn't you like to be in the chamber of commerce selling prime building sites on the Skunk River? There are two small lakes that can be quite good. Due east of Ames off Highway 30 south of the town of Colo is Hickory Grove Park. There is an 80 acre impound there that has decent pan fish and small bass. You can rent a canoe at the park or fish from shore. I have not been out in the last few weeks because the water was high and brown, but it should have cleared some. North of Ames is Little Wall Lake, and that can also yield bass and blue gills. This has been good in the past, but a private contractor that was supposed to dredge the lake broke a retaining dam and ended up draining much of the water. I am not sure if it has recovered fully. The Iowa DNR website gives some additional spots http://www.iowadnr.com/fish/index.html Trout are about 2 to 3 hours away in the NE portion of the state - the driftless area. You might check iowaoutdoor.org for discussions on other sites. David "vtv001" wrote in message ...
