o.k., let me say a few things about my post.
first- i may have set a false tone by accidentally omitting my intended
question mark in the subject heading. i was "asking a question" purely in
fun-related to joking around that took place at work.

secondly, i already have a feeling that this may be a sensitive subject,
even with the few responses i have seen thus far.
certainly it was not my intention to offend anyone, and i hope i haven't.

Don't worry about it. The flyfishing community (if there is such a
thing) is worse than the church. Everybody has his personal list of
commandments (thou shall not fish anything that sinks, for example) and
some of us are worse than Jehova's in spreading their word. Do what you
like, the main thing about (fly)fishing is to have fun, whatever you tie
on and however you fish it.
I even fish maggots on a flyrod if it delivers the goods, and I couldn't
care less if it's called flyfishing or not.

Yes Daisy Mae, this is a sensitive subject.

My experience is fairly typical of most American fly fishermen
before "The Movie". I started fishing as a child with a cane pole,
a worm, and a red & white bobber, then graduated to a Zebco 33
closed face spinning reel then a Garcia Mitchell spinning rig and
finally, when I was 11, my dad gave me one of his old fly rods.

The whole progression is one of increasingly difficult to acquire
skill sets with fly fishing as the pinnacle. Many of us who came
to fly fishing in this way consider fly fishing to be not just one
way of fishing, but the best way and the most difficult to master.

Are we elitists to believe this ? Well, I am. I am an elite among
fishermen and it would be ridiculous to deny it. Some of the folks
on this newsgroup are elite fishermen but cannot bear the thought
of being labeled an elitist. That's a useful distinction for some,
by the way, the distinction between an elite and an elitist, but
for me it's a distinction with little difference.

Your chucklehead friends are jealous of fly fishermen and that's
pretty much the natural order of things. Let them be jealous.
There's not a thing in the world wrong with being an elitist
fisherman.

Well, FYI, it's not, it's called bait fishing. There's nothing wrong
with that, where legal, but it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi that
real fly fishing has in abundance.

If you want to fish with bait, where legal, that's cool. I enjoy
sitting in a lawn chair, Budweiser at the elbow, waiting for the
tip of my rod to move ever so slightly when a catfish takes the
big gob of worms I've heaved out into the Mississippi River.

But that's not fly fishing either and when I fish that way I've
found that my feces is malodorous, whereas when I fly fish it is
not. ;-)

No Daisy Mea, this *is not* a sensitive subject, unless you are an anal retentive
asshole named Kenny Fortenberry. There is nothing ELITE about flyfishin', unless you
have a swelled head and cowardly nature, like Kenny Fortenberry.

Contrary to Kenny Fortenberry's opinion, most all endeavors of any worth are a
"progression...of increasingly difficult to acquire skill sets with flyfishing [far]
from the pinnacle." Few of us who came to flyfishin', for whatever reason, consider
flyfishin' to be the best way of fishin' nor the more difficult to master than
masturbation.

Are we just everyday folks? YES WE ARE, including Kenny Fortenberry! And it is
beyond ridiculous to think otherwise.

This ain't rocket science, btw, unless your name is Kenny Fortenberry!

I know. It's just called fishing in my book. I love to fish dries to a
rising trout. I also love casting streamers for bass, and I get a kick
of taking the kids fishing with a long pole with bobber and maggots for
whatever fish. I must admit that the maggots on a flyrod were a bit of a
troll :-).
It is rare that I get the chance to fish a nice river for trout and
grayling, so I make do with what's there. In my case it's the river
Rhine, which has been heavily polluted until some twenty years ago. The
fish stocks are not bad, there are all kinds of coarse fish around, and
even the odd seatrout or salmon if you're extremely utterly lucky.
Fishing small streamers can produce anything from rudd, roach or ide to
yellow perch, asp, pike and zander. Not 'offical gamefish' at all, but
so effin' hard to fool so now and then with fur and feather. I love to
catch them on fly, but I don't want to be limited to that.
I gave up on being a flyfisher. I am a fisher, there's way too much fun
to be had to stick to upstream dry fly only or whatever mental rulebook.
