Magnetic hooks

Nearlly all transformers have a huge magnetic field around them. Instead of
passing each hook thru the little tool.... take the whole box and bring them
next to an active transformer, preferably one that lowers voltage from say,
120 to 24. ........ Hold the box closely for a few seconds and then back well
away from the transformer, at
least 3-4 feet. Now check for magnetism... probably gone.

Will that work with a permanent magnet?

What puzzles me is that you do the same thing to magnetize things,
don't you? Some of my fly tying tools are maegnetized, and I think
it's becuse they were near, or touched, a magnet I use to search for
and pick up lost hooks.

Magnetic hooks

I have a minor, yet uncomfortable, problem:
I have this habit to pick my midgehooks out of their boxes with the back-end
of my whipfinisher, which has a small but rather strong magnet on it. When
tying flies for the midgeswap it turned up that all the tiny hooks (about a
100 #24 hooks) became magnetic, so now they all stick together. I'm pretty
sure that there must be an easy solution for this, but somehow (is that dr.
Alzheimer knocking at my door?) I can't come up with the solution.
Any ideas out there?

TIA

You can get a small demagnetizer for tools like this:

I personally use an old "personal" vibrator, [and not the sex
type..... ] with the moving parts removed and the case replaced. Fifty
cents at garage sales and flea market sales..... Has a TON of uses... disks,
tapes, screwdrivers, etc.

FWIW, I expect you could use most tool demagnetizers on an entire box
of midge hooks.

A magnetizing tool is MUCH different than an Alternating Field. There is a
magnetic flux that surrounds transformers and different hooks might be
magnetized at opposite ends... i.e., + on one side, - on the other. Putting
the hooks in the AC field inducts magnetism... when taken slowly away from
the field as it oscillates the magnetism within the hooks becomes less and
less as you pull the item(s) away from the transformer. And at least 3-4
feet, too!!

One other thing, guys... pull the hooks away from the transformer
S-L-O-W-L-Y...... take it awat at about 6" per second... and 3-4 FULL FEET.

When all life has magnetism, why remove it, it probably represents a
living thing to fish?
I have magnetised my flies for years and caught above the average no of
fish at most
locations.

Hmmmm...

Magnetism.

A secret new weapon against the conniving little creatures that swim in our
lakes and streams.

It works especially well on steelhead.

I wonder what the added effect of a tight copper ribbing would be.
