Tarpon fishing?

My husband and I would like to catch some large tarpon (more than 50 lbs). We saw some a
few years ago fly fishing in the Florida Keys, but we're able to catch any. Where else
can we have the opportunity to catch such large tarpon (either spinning or fly fishing)
and what time of year is best? Anywhere in Mexico (Yucatan area??) or Caribbean? If
there's other things to do as well, it would be nice, since I'd rather not spend every
single day fishing (a day or two off give my arms a rest would be nice :-D) Oh, and if we
could catch some snook, that would be a bonus!

Thanks for any advice.

Maxine

Never been personally but have heard some first hand reports about Costa
Rica. Snook should also be an option.

Tarpon will be running the entire west coast of Florida from the Keys to
Tarpon Springs from now through July, maybe August. I have friends in
the Sarasota area that have caught 100# plus fish from Kayaks using
dollar crabs or pin fish.

The Skyway bridge in Tampa Bay is another good option.

There are good opportunities in the Keys as well; I have only had one
hook up and never landed a fish there. Night fishing around the bridges
is a maybe a better bet for catching.

I have caught tarpon off the Georgia coast, St. Simons area in the early
fall. This is all bait fishing. Not an option for snook I think but bull
reds may be an option and shark are a definite target. Large blacktips
will be a blast.

Good Fishin'

Tarpon fishing?

hi maxine , i live very close to the skyway bridge at the mouth of tampa
bay . i couldnt possibly recommend a better fishing spot for HUGE tarpon
!! right now they are lined up aong the pier (old bridge) like cord wood
....... the entire 7 miles of pier mind you . and as for 100 lbs ......
sorry but that aint nothing .. even my 4 y/o has hooked a silver king
.... heehee proud mom here ! but then again youre going for ultra light
tackle you might want a smaller fish . an amusing story .... a few weeks
ago , i think about two weeks , a young man was pulled right over the
side of the skyway ! he hooked into something large . i suspect a good
size tarpon or possibly a shark , and goliath grouper arnt unheard of at
the bridge . the coast guard had to come recue him as the tides rip thru
there . when asked what happened he said " its a brand new pole !!! i
couldnt let go of it !!" the coast gaurd said when they picked him up
from the pilings he was still holding his brand new rod , lol . this guy
btw weighed over 275 so you can imagine the size of the fish that pulled
him over !!! ................................ best to all ,
Nan
