I once converted an old sewing machine motor with a foot pedal to use
for rod building. The variable speed was a big advantage.

I am currently building one . Would you like to see a picture when I'm done.
I made the rollers and am using a pop corn machine motor for the power side
of it.
I'm using conduit for the base supports so I can make it as long as I want.
I think it is going to an excellent machine when I'm done
