What do you think about the closed season now, do you think it should be

Imo it should be re-established on stillwaters too. The banks on some local
ponds never get a chance to recover. As it happens I don't care much for
pond fishing and I've only once been coarse fishing in the old closed
period. Mind you I'm lucky enough to be able to go game or sea fishing
instead.

I do feel the closed period is a couple of weeks too early. Too often fish
are still in breeding condition at the end of June but with the exception of
pike I've never seen any at it before the end of the season in mid March.

I belong to three local clubs which provide in total 10 lakes (size 3 to 25
acres) a fair few miles of river fishing and one small section of canal. The
rivers and canal have the traditional close season as do 3 of the lakes. At
all the clubs the efforts of the club's working parties (which operate all
year regardless) and in some instances the EA keep all venues in tip top
condition. I notice little (if any) difference in the overall
condition/welfare of either the bankside or fish. However, these waters do
have a limited membership (some allow guest ticket with member) so can not
really be compared to commercial day ticket ponds which get hammered all the
time, and are Imo over stocked .... what I call clockwork fisheries.

BTW the close season doesn't (Ime) match spawning period too well anyway,
and may do worse in the future.

Ah well the close season on 2 lakes I fish at least gives the resident
otters a peaceful period for a good feed !!!!!

Regards ...... Richard

I too love my section of river and miss it during the closed coarse season
however you could take up fly fishing and carry on fishing the rivers.

No, there's no exemption for flyfishing.

And why is it the weather conditions are idea on the one day when it's
impossible to avoid other commitments?

Weed has started growing noticeably on the Stour around Blandford within the
last fortnight.

Do you remember when the close season was the close season and we had to go
sea fishing if we wanted to wet a line.I normally had a go for mullet around
Poole harbour or wrasse on a carp rod from Kimmeridge.
Then you were able to go to venues stocked with Trout and fish for then
using coarse methods and it you caught coarse fish by accident you had to
put them back straight away.Yes silly rules.

A little early for mullet but there are bream and early bass about - ooops
OT here.

That was a straightforward attempt to evade the rules. It ought to have
been stamped out from the start. There is plenty of perfectly good trout
fishing to be had, by whatever method, in places where the chance of
catching coarse fish is minimal. It is curious then it was never tried the
other way round even though the indigenous trout fishing close is much
longer.
