TR: Saltwater East end of Long Island NY 6/30
Spent the morning today with Captain Ken Rafferty, a guide out of Three Mile
Harbor. http://www.fishing-longisland.com/Index.htm (Standard disclaimer that I have no connection to Ken, except enjoying fishing with him today.) A couple of Striped Bass in the 25-30" range, a couple of fair sized Bluefish. Fun shots at both species, and maybe a small sand shark (wind was picking up so hard to see what that brown shape was), on the flats. Chartreuse streamers and a simple sandflea pattern. A big blue cut off a sandflea when I thought I was casting to a striper. Bluefish daisychaining in 2 feet of water around Gardiner's Island repeatedly fled when they saw the fly line. I've never seen blues so spooky. But I've never seen blues lined up like that, even sitting still, waiting for peanut bunker to wash over a bar. A couple of very big stripers on flats. I was back casting, trying to get the fly in front of them before they traveled to where they could see the boat. Follows, failure. Aaargh. Ken was knowlegeable, entertaining (except when he was laughing at me for cursing the blues when I dropped the line across one and 20 ran). Fun, learned a lot (not enough to catch the toughest fish), going back first chance I get. GKT |
