OT Good deal on Zinfandels

The way I heard the story from a gossipy sort is that Mrs.
never wanted to live out in the boonies in the first place
but she agreed to it if hubbie would build her a seven-figure
palace. So he did, but then Mrs. decided she couldn't possibly
live in the boonies anymore even in a seven-figure palace.

So now the vineyards, the winery, the whole shebang is up for
sale. Problem is, it's hard to sell it with that seven-figure
palace sitting on it.

Anyway, their drama is your gain. These are wonderful California
Zinfandels and they are practically giving them away because the
sale of the winery is STILL pending.

The web site is out of date so call the 800 number, I got a note
in today's mail that the 2000 Rossi Ranch and the 2000 Bella Lisa
are now 50% off by the case. (Those are both WONDERFUL Zins and
we paid more than that for the few that remain in our cellar.)

We found out a couple of months ago (on a trip around the Fingerlakes winery
area) Massachusetts has a state law that prohibits mail-order or web-order of
wine. *That* was a major disappointment as we'd hit on some outstanding Cabs
but didn't have room to carry more than a couple of mixed cases.

And the state-wide ban on smoking in any building even remotely "public" -
including smoking rooms in businesses - starts on Monday. Arrrgh!

/daytripper (As far as vices go, we in MA are good at screwing ourselves ;-)

Bummer.

Maybe you could get your friend in New York to take delivery,
mail order there is still legal, for the time being.

Might be legal everywhere soon, two separate cases winding their way through
the fed court system now dealing with restraint of interstate commerce.
Hope they're resolved soon, it's almost time for Sam's warehouse sale (Sam's
Wine and Spirits in Chicago, not Sam's Club)

We married off the oldest daughter last month. One of the wedding guests
was an aunt who lives in the finger lakes area, in fact, she works for the
New York State Wine Growers Assn as a PR person. She gifted us a couple of
mixed cases, most of them from vintners I never would have tried. Splendid
stuff.

That's me old stomping grounds. If the map is halfway correct that place
( about a mile south of Forestville use to be a gravenstein apple orchard.
The area around Sebastapol use to be big gravenstein producing area. I use
to work for Frei Brothers for part of the summers. There big apple orchard
was east of Forestville. The last time I was there the kids ( 4 th
generation ) had sold out to Gallo and the whole 800 acres was vinyard.
If you can get anything from the Frei Ranch Dry Creek vinyard go for it.

We'll be touring the area in September, this time with a bigger car.
