Two week's worth of TR's - Missouri River Montana

Decided on a last minute whim to spend the final 8 days of June fishing
the Missouri River from Wolf Creek bridge to Craig, Montana, a town with
two fly shops but neither a gas station nor grocery store. No TR
narrative is planned as I cannot conjure the words to sufficiently capture
the experience - that might change after a few weeks. Let me just say
that it rekindled a love affair with trout. Lots of fish in the 16" - 18"
range. Never seen so many large fish shamelessly smashing the surface
while taking bugs - sounded like the flushing of old-style water-guzzling
toilets when they were rising. Not always easy fishing. Sometimes
gangbusters. Frustrating PMD and PED hatches, eagerly airborne rainbow
trout, fat chunky brown trout, enough water to spread out. Too early for
the Trico hatch but no mosquitoes either. Riffles, runs, pools, small
creek conditions and more abound on the Missouri even though it is 100
yards wide in most places. Easy floating in a float tube with enough good
walk-in water to keep it interesting for more than a week of fishing over
a mere 5 miles of water. Best trout fishing ever in my short decade of
fly angling in terms of quantity and size of fish, healthy fighting
abilities of the quarry, diversity of water available within a short
distance from camp.

Sounds like you hit things just right. Hope they stay that way for the
Clave, and since you're in the neighborhood, are you stopping by?
