Please help with my dock.
I was asked to build a dock on lake front property. Does the dock have
to float or can I build it like I would a deck? Please help. The dock would run 20 out into the water and would be about 2 feet deep at it's deepest point. -- Chris F Long Island, USA. Floating docks are for lakes that have moving water levels, I have one on a lake that it's levels move 30 feet every year. Lakes that have steady levels, or where the end is not in deep water should be built on post, it's cheaper, stronger, and safer -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Long Shot "WIGGLE" rig, SpecTastic Thread Boomerang Fishing Pro. ,Stand Out Hooks ,Stand Out Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, Decoy Activator and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

I suggest that someone else builds the dock if you need to ask this question!"America the beautiful" dom_Fries wrote in message t... I was asked to build a dock on lake front property. I've built a dock onto existing water like that. I used pressure
treated lumber and contruction blueboard as the floating material. I built it exactly like a deck. I used 2X10's as the side boards. The blueboard was 2" thick and I used 4 pieces together for a 4X8X8" float. My walk out is two sections and each section is 4'X12' long. Each section has 1 4X8X8" module of blue board keeping it up. The end section is 10'X8' and has 2 blueboard modules on either side. To keep the dock from moving side to side while you walk on it I put U bolts in the wood on the side sections and inserted 1" galvanized pipe through them and into the water and then pounded them into the mud at the bottom of the pond. It keeps it rock solid. Here's a link to it. It only shows one walk out section, I later added a second. http://www.wildlifereserve.org/dock.html Blueboard should hold 55 pounds per square foot of foam. Sam That would be 55 pounds per cubic foot of foam, not per square foot. A large difference. Jon |

Build the dock that floats. You may also consider adding a 10hp motor
to it. Register it with the local government as a homemade boat. There was an article in Adirondack Life a while back about this. Many residents of Star Lake, I believe, built such "docks/boats" and would meet together at the middle of the lake for get-togethers. Pretty cool article. Pretty wild "docks." Two-level, seats 15 people, slide-equipped, gas grills and even a head. |
