I just bought a used 17' aluminum modified V boat. The boat rig weighs about
1200 pounds. At times I will want to anchor do some still-fishing. What type
anchors and ropes should I use for anchoring in up to 25' deep water in man
made lakes? Right now I am leaning toward 12-15 lb river or navy style
anchors with 3/8" twisted nylon rope. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I like the Minnkota crab claw 15 or 18 lb anchors. Something else that
helps it to tie on a mushroom anchor 10 ft up the line from the main anchor.
This helps to keep the line on the bottom and allows the main anchor to dig
in. For that mushroom anchor, 8 or 10lb should be sufficient.

3 or 4 foot of plastic coated chain between the anchor and the rope does the
trick just fine. I owuld reccomend a 100' of line. On a windy day you will
need to be able to put the rope at a good angle.

Craig, see links below for anchor types and information. However your choice
of anchors will be determined on a few conditions. What type of lake bottom
do you plan to anchor in? Example mud, sand, rock. How much boat traffic
will be present while anchored? (Take in consideration wakes from
inconsiderate boaters) Maximum wind conditions you plan on anchoring in?

My personal recommendation is a fortress or danforth type anchor. I would
also add 3 to 4 feet of plastic coated chain between your anchor and rope.
As far as rope length you need to carry will be determined by the slope of
your anchor. I would stay away from making my own anchor rope. I would buy
premade anchor line with a thimble spliced in. If you decide you need a 125
feet of rope go with a little bit more. A regular extension cord holder
that looks like a shape of an "H" works well to keep the anchor line nice
and neat in your boat. You can let out just what you need plus a little
extra to tie off the anchor and keep the rest off the floor in a pile. It
keeps the rope from being tangled.
