Fizzy hemp...

Got fed up paying around 2 quid for a tin of hemp that's gone after a few
handfuls so decided to go back to cooking my own again. (Hate the smell but
the value can't be beaten)... thing is, does anyone know what the extra
ingredients are to make it fizz, like what it says on the tin?
Cheers for any info

I used to add a tablespoon of salt and 2 tablespoons of bicarb to every 2lbs
of seeds...

Like you, I prefer to cook my own, unfortunately none of the three tackle
shops near me (north west Leicestershire) stock it uncooked - does anyone
know where I could bulk buy?

Thanks for the advice there Matt, I'll give it a try!

As for buying it raw in bulk, I've always got it from petshops or pet stalls
on the market. Don't know what the going rate is but I bought 2kg for £2.70
on Norwich market at the weekend. Admittedly the stall was selling a limited
quantity and range of fishing tackle but it was predominantly a pet
food/accessories stall.

Happy hemp hunting!
;-)

I got a 20kg sack from Jollies (Petstore) for about £17

As said any pet food wholesaler (yellow pages will turn a few up),
most also stock yew nuts (csl pellets to the carp tackle trade), brown
crumb, fish meal, trout pellets, maples, maize the list goes on all at a
fraction the price that fishing shops sell them at. ok so you have to get a
few kg :), but if there's 2 or 3 of you.
The smell, try using a pressure cooker 20 mins then leave to cool outside
doesn't remove the smell but you don't have to live with it for that long,
the water hemp ratio takes a bit of working out to just leave enough water,
once they cool enough to remove the lid I add some boiling water to just
above the hemp.
Fizz, you can roast some uncooked hemp them grind it up add this and you
will achieve a degree of fizzzzzz ;-)
bicarb helps soften them and makes them darker, well always seem to with
mine.

Thanks Phil, after a few minutes on Yell.com I found I also had a Jollye's
near me, must have driven past it a thousand times but it never registered!

20kg for £13.99, can't go wrong...
