Yellowstone Pics
Well...not too much to show but here a couple of links to my pics from
Yellowstone. It was mostly a photography trip from 3 -12 July...sorry I missed the guys in the Western Clave... I took a lesson in fly casting at Bass Pro in Grapevine before heading out. Two pros from Temple Fork Outfitters and Dave from the fly shop at Bass Pro taught the class. Figured I would just go and do it without a guide when I got to Yellowstone. Probably should have hired a guide! I did bring two books on fly fishing Yellowstone since I am newbie to fly fishing. Only got to fish about 1 hour a day while the rest of the group was off taking in the geysers, animals etc... Tried the Upper Gardiner, the Firehole, the Wind River, Clark's Fork outside the park in Wyoming and two spots on the Gibbon...also Yellowstone Lake near Gull Point. Was fishing a hopper pattern with no takers until Yellowstone lake where I hooked up but promptly lost the fish. I did see trout in the Gibbon and Firehole but clearly I was not showing these trout anything they wanted. I did try Salmon Flies on the Gardiner but never got a take. (just north of Mammoth Springs) Finally, on the last day of the trip, a guy named Jeff from Coldwater Creek in Jackson Wyoming told me to use a 24-30 inch nymph dropper off a caddis fly as an indicator. Even told me one of his favorite spots on the Snake River just south of Jackson. I hooked 6 and landed 4 cut throats with the biggest one running 10 inches. My first trout on a fly rod. I didn't want to risk dunking my digital camera so the only shots of me fishing are from my friend who dropped me off at the different sites. Must have slipped at least 50 times and was surprised I didn't go for an unplanned swim at least once. :-) http://home.comcast.net/~dscreen/vac...e/yellow06.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~dscreen/vac...e/yellow19.jpg I did see some cutthroats swimming around the West Thumb Geyser Basin....of course this was a protected area with no fishing allowed. Similar to the Fishing Bridge area. Two in the first shot and a clearer one in the second pic. http://home.comcast.net/~dscreen/vac...e/yellow43.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~dscreen/vac...e/yellow44.jpg Don Allen, TX PS. I did get to stop into Jacklin's Fly Shop in West Yellowstone. Bob Jacklin was extremely helpful and his shop is definitely worth a visit! |
