Foating lines
 

Going to be getting a new floater, my rio mainstream is wasted. In the past
I've been a big fan of Cortland 444 SL and Lazer lines.

So looking over the current offerings I am attracted by the Cortland 555
Ghost tip, 15 feet of clear floating tip sounds like it might just be the
ticket for spooky fish. Seems like I recall mixed reaction to the 555 lines
though.

So is the 555 really cool or the pits?

Other thoughts?

I've had difficulty with my 555 lines sinkin'. I have tried to seal them but they
just continue to suck-up water. Additionally, they seem coil badly in colder weather.
Granted I haven't purchased a 555, lately.

I've had a WF/F 555 on my primary (9/5) rod for the last two or maybe even
three years.

- I like the "castability" - it's a relatively stiff line and shoots very well
indeed. And I like the olive color (I guess there was some other, not so
pleasing color that I managed to avoid).

- I discovered I don't like mono-core lines as I can't needle-knot 'em, so I
ended up gluing on a braided loop - which I'm not crazy about.

It's not a floating clear-tip line, however. The little I've heard about those
was dominated by the poor floating tip.

Other thoughts?

- The Cortland 444SL and SA Mastery lines that I (still) use on the rest of my
rods are damned fine braided-core lines.

- We're gonna get blown out of any Andy conceptions this weekend :-(

the rain has started here... true to my joy in selfish schadenfreude,
here's hoping it moves on up your way in a hurry. this past weekend i
had the best flounder and puppy drum fishing adventure in more than 2
years. the salty water has just returned to normal in the pamlico sound
and we don't need any more floods thru the estuaries...

Are you looking for a coldwater line, warmwater, or tropic? I have 4
coldwater lines that I will sell cheap. Two have never been fished, one has
been fished once, and one extensivley. These line have way too much memory.
It is hard to get the 555 clear lines back on the spool once you get them
straight. The regular lines aren't as bad if you are fishing in moving
water that pulls one your line, but when you cast out on still water, you
loose about 25% of your cast as the line coils. Unless they have made some
changes in the past year, i couldn't recommend them.

However if you are fishing in warm or tropical water, their stiffness may be
a benefit. Too supple lines tangle too much, and will not cast as far.
