Yes and yes. IMO if a line works good for you on a spinning reel you'll
have good luck with it on a baitcaster. A seven foot rod is a very good
choice - it's versatile. You'll have trouble...

over the side vs. the Sahara is much greater. This of course increases

I'd get a Shimano Stradic or Diawa Capricorn (do they still make them?).
St. Croix has their own reel made by Diawa; I have two of them and they've
served me well over two years.
