for a beginner what
type of rod rod should I get and what is the average price of a decent
fly fishing rod? also what is the best time of day to fly fish?
probablly dinner time eh?
OK I'm back; bird season is over, it's time to start tying for spring.
What size/wt. rod to get really depends on what type of fishing you'll be
doing and on what type of streams. Generally, longer rods for wide open
water, wee little rods for brushy trickles. Light lines are less likely to
spook fish, but aren't as good at throwing larger and heavier streamers. On
top of that, there is a lot of personal preference involved with whether the
rod has a fast or a slow taper, etc.
IMO, a good all-around starter rod would be an 8 1/2' rod, in a medium or
slower action, 5 or 6 weight.
There are a lot of half-decent fairly inexpensive rods out there, and you'll
likely get a number of good recommendations. I've had good luck with the
green Cortland rods; I have an 8 1/2' 5/6 weight 4-piece that throws a line
just as pretty as any rod I've tried. I think you can get a pretty nice rod
for 100 - 120 bucks.
A lot of folks say early morning is the best time to fish, but it's also the
best time to sleep, so I wouldn't know. I like fishing best on summer
afternoons; work till 2 or 3, then fish all afternoon and evening.
Dinnertime is indeed a good time to fish, for I'll often see an early
evening hatch come off just after everybody has packed it in and gone home
to dinner. A stream that had been crowded only an hour before, and suddenly
fish are rising everywhere. That happens a lot, especially in the spring/
late spring.
Really, though, the best thing is just to be out there till you get into the
cycle of the whole thing - no matter what time of day it is, some fish
somewhere will take the proper presentation. The real key is to get used to
what works with your fish in your water at your time.
