Costa Rica's going to blow you away! Me, my wife and two of our
friends are headed back down there in mid-March for our fourth trip in
two years!
For fly fishing, what you need depends on what you're after and since
there's both fresh and sal****er fishing. For starters and believe it
or not, Costa Rica has some excellent trout fishing and so, a 4- or
5-weight would do just fine. The best place for it is called "Savegre
Mountain Hotel" and is located a bit over two-hours from the capital,
San Jose. If you have a car/truck, take Route 2 out of San Jose and
travel to the kilometer 80 signpost. Follow the sign indicated
"Entrada a San Gerardo de Dota", and travel 9 kilometers to the
facility, a rustic place with clean, cozy cabins at an elevation of
7,500' above sea level. Regular bus service also runs between San Jose
and San Ysidro and costs about $3 US. Tell the driver to drop you at
Kilometer 80 and have the hotel staff pick you up at the drop-off.

Also, there are a number of freshwater and brackish rivers ("rios" in
Espanol) as well as deep sea fishing to be had. Again, it depends on
what species you're after--blue marlin might require as much as a
14-weight!! Sailfish and Marlin will be at peak populations at the end
of March, and roosterfish, snook and others can be caught as well. If
