right up until the last second. I've heard that doing it under running
water works, but I can't figure out how to cut them very neatly with water
running over them. The glasses sound strange, as the air currents can move
around them easily. Certainly the fingers away from the face thing sounds
logical.
Don't know what the solution is, but I know there are about as many
suggestions as there are cooks. I think the origins of superstition and
voodoo must have started with someone who came up with a method to keep
their eyes from watering when cutting onions.

Hold a slice of white bread in your mouth. You'll have to move it around a
bit, as it becomes soggy, but it works.
