I know this may really might sound stupid but after several conversations
with a brother-in-law I have a question.....If I am right handed what side
of a bait caster should the crank handle be on and what side of a spincast
reel should the handle be on? I currently have my bait cast set ups with
the crank on the right side of the reel and my spin cast set ups the crank
is on the left side of the reel. My brother-in-law seems to think that I am
fishing my spin cast set ups backwards. Who is right???
Thanks for your time!
Scott
If you talk to a "pro" (which I definitely am not), they will tell you they
want to be in a constant state of readiness before the lure hits the water.
More simply put, they don't want to change hands after casting. Thus they
orient their rod/reels to keep them in the same hand as they cast with and
"crank" with the opposite hand. Not all pros follow that logic, but most
seem to. For me, I'm an old dog and new "tricks" do not come as easily as
they once did. I cast with my right, switch the rod to my left, and crank
with my right hand- unless I'm using a spinning rod which I keep in my right
hand at all times. Why? Because that's the way I've always done it.
