I fish both sides usually. Yes, you can get your license at a number of
spots on the NY side once you get up there. You can get a VT license in
Orvis, which is a annual ritual for me, or at a general store on Rt 316
in Arlington, which makes superb lunches. I would make the risky
assumptions that a) you will visit Orvis Flagship and b) bears do indeed
**** in the woods?
I have to say that opening day generally is a bust 99/100 times and
usually reserved to streamer fishing and deep nymphing. Having said that
my buddy took a 19 inch brown on opening day last year on a white zonker.
In recent years we have had prolific hendricksons but no rise on the
upper part of the river in VT. Only once in 10 years have I witnessed
any kind of rise on the VT side (which is not to say it doesn't happen).
However there are rumors of secret spots (tm) on the NY side where the
water is a tad warmer and the fish rise to the dun. Myself and my
fishing partner may scout that this year.
If we are going to pick a time to go up there for a mini-clave, I would
have to say mid-May onwards till end of June (depending on how the rest
of Spring treats us you can shift that up or down a week). Then,
skipping over the dog days, from 2nd week of August through the end of
September for the tricos. Having said that you are welcome to fish with
me any time you like outside of those times!!

Today was a nice day here in beautiful New England - neared about 50
deg. F. and was bright and sunny. Tomorrow morning I'll go off on an
exploratory mission to see how the banks are thawing. Another week
or so of this and I'll be on the rivers in no time. WoooooHOOOOO!
Let's hope the rain today finishes off the rest of snow pack. I am
starting to see my lawn again. First time since December 26th. Might
even have to think about the B/Kill soon ... 21 days till opening.
If the weather stays decent (read: NO MORE FREAKIN' SNOW), 21 days isn't
a bad target at all. Do you usually fish the VT side or NY side? Any
problem getting a license once I get there, or should I get it in
advance?
I never did find an opening to get out on my scouting mission yesterday,
but I think it's safe to say I would have found a lot of ice and mud
around the local area.
