Might just as well take a look at Big Bay too.:

In looking for information about the Huron Mountain Club, I found this
very
interesting page:

http://www.michiganhighways.org/inde...huronmtns.html

My uncle's camp was located on the Huron River, just west of the Huron
Mountains and the western limit of the HMC holdings. I've often wondered
if
one could drive from Skanee to Big Bay/Marquette. According to this page,
it looks like it would be possible, but only under the best conditions and
with a 4WD vehicle.

Man, wish I still had the deed to that camp...

I haven't looked at that page in detail yet, but I DID look at the area on
DeLorme's "Street Atlas". It looks as if the area marked as "Impassable" on
the 1932 map might be what DeLorme calls Northwestern Road. I'm not at all
familiar with this area, but if it's anything like what I'm familiar with in
the far western U.P. it is almost certainly navigable with just about any
vehicle. I know of many roads that show up as "4WD" trails on maps and that
are pretty well maintained. As undeveloped (relatively speaking) as the
U.P. is, it's seeing a lot more tourist traffic these days.....especially
since the snowmobile boom....and the various counties and even individual
townships are taking pretty good care of what used to be strictly logging
roads.

out every possible road access (to both branches), complete with shortest
route to the river from each access point......AND gps coordinates and
compass directions.
