The only place I have seen fishermen go by length rather than weight in
estimating fish size is among trout anglers, and in more recent years,
anglers who ply waters where a slot limit is in effect.

With bass -- particularity LMB, the length is a very poor indicator of the
'size' of the fish, because their girth varies so much. I've caught 15"
bass that weighed almost 3 pounds, and 19 inch bass that weighed barely
more than that.
