The only place I have seen fishermen go by length rather than weight in
estimating fish size is among trout anglers, and in more recent years,
anglers who ply waters where a slot limit is in effect.
With bass -- particularity LMB, the length is a very poor indicator of the
'size' of the fish, because their girth varies so much. I've caught 15"
bass that weighed almost 3 pounds, and 19 inch bass that weighed barely
more than that.
It's really common in my area to discuss fish in length. Muskie anglers in
particular go by length but even the bass and walleye guys, unless they're
tournament fishing, talk about how long a fish was.
I think that if I asked a local guy what a fish weighed, he couldn't tell me
within 1/2 pound, but he'd be accurate within 1/4 of an inch.
