It's probably Brushtail possum body fur especially in NZ where the
brushtail is an introduced pest/vermin.
Actually Steve, the NZ possum is imported from Australia. None of the
Marsupials are native to NZ. I have a couple pairs of socks made from this
stuff, and I'm on the verge of retiring them to the fly tying table. They're
overly fuzzy with some stiff hails, perfect for stonefly nymphs.
