I've honestly never understood the appeal of "the fight" in fishing when
reading such stories. Some of Zane Gray's epic struggles sounded
incredibly boring, to me.
At about the 30 minute mark I was thinking, "**** you, tarpon! Just
quit, damn it."
My usual attitude when fishing for trout is similar to yours: The fight
is anticlimactic, and fooling the fish into taking the fly is the
important thing. On the other hand, if the fish doesn't fight well for
one reason or another, that does tend to spoil the experience.
