Where is the Smith located in Montana?
//snip//

I canoed down the Smith several years ago during the first week of July. It
was not terribly low, but clearly was nearing the end of its season. It's a
wonderful trip. Just over sixty miles, mostly through a canyon, and once you
put in you can't get out of the canyon until the end. Main problem is that
you have to designate your camp site for each night before you put in at
White Sulphur Springs, and if you miss the campsite ('boat camp') you have
to paddle back upstream to reach it. It's important to go with someone who
is fairly familiar with the river, and if you're in a canoe you need to have
pretty decent skills.

Starts around White Sulphur Springs and flows into the Missouri just
upstream fromGreat Falls. Access is controlled. You have to apply for a
permit in the winter, which is what we did, or you have to rely on a guide
who has a permit.
