Ever run a business before?
Actually yes, years ago in NYC so i'm familiar. My current job
responsibilities have tripled and it's worse than running a business cause
all I draw is a salary.
Been a while has it. You forget about worrying about being able to pay
everybody else, and hoping there is something left over for yourself. You
forget about working 16 hour days so you can fix employees mess ups for free
and then do two other jobs so you have the money to pay them for the time
they spent not doing the job?
Seriously. I'ld have to look at the profit potential and the possibility of
losing the deal if your "buddy" sees you making too much money out of it.
Partnerships are always tough. Personally I prefer to give my "friends" my
business advice for free and keep them as friends instead.
Also, retail is tough. I grew up in a country general store, and managed a
hardware store for my dad when I was in my late teens. I am intimately
acquainted with it, and I hate it. I barely manage in the people department
as a contractor. My own failing of course. I can't imagine going back into
a retail store front business and having no choice about who I have to deal
with everyday. Some people love it and thrive on it.
Sounds like you may have the skills if you take the time to think it
through, but honestly only you can determine if you will be happy doing it.
