You know, I haven't found smallmouth to get that excited about buzzbaits,
except at night, but I don't think I'll be able to fish a weedy lake without
succumbing to the temptation to throw it. I'll let the fish tell me if I'm
wasting my time.
If I don't get buzzbait action pretty quick, I can always count on
spinnerbaits. Mohawksin has a healthy population of sunnies, and a bluegill
pattern should turn some heads -- both smallmouth as well as muskies and
pike. It's really a more subtle version of our Firetiger Perch, which has
been real productive in the upper Midwest.
I wish I had records of what the fish were all caught on in the last few
years on Boom.... I'd not be surprised if the bulk of fish weren't caught on
spinnerbaits and soft plastics, mainly tubes and Senko-like baits.
Speaking of which, I've laid in a good stock of Driftwood Lures hand-dipped
tubes and their creature baits, too, and I expect to be using them to comb
steeper banks near deep water, mid-lake humps, docks, riprap and
constriction zones around bridges where there's some current, and stump
fields. The online maps have been very instructive, and our HotSpots map
should be showing up in the mail tomorrow. That is one target-rich lake!
Like most of their lures, Driftwood's "drift sticks" are made with powdered
sea salt, and they're gaining a loyal following in Kentucky and all the
surrounding states. I'll pack some of those, along with a bunch of their
flippin shads, too. Three weeks.... hope this heat breaks and we're back to
seasonable air and water temps by then.

Yep, pretty cool.
I'm going to go predict right now that the big fish that wins the
competition will be a 4.3-pound smallmouth. That seems to be the magic
number for me so far this year... I've caught three or four smallies that
size. The mount will make a nice addition to my home office. Thanks, Steve.

Now that is what I call confidence. What do you plan on catching your
winning fish on? I know it will be an SW, but buzz or spinner? Any
particular flavor - rock craw maybe?
2nd at the MTC, ah-yup - a 1st at the NWC is the next step up.
