Secret Weapon Lures is donating spinnerbaits and buzzbaits to participants
of the Northwoods Classic this year. I'm wondering what lures will be most
welcome for Mohawksin.
This lake on the Wisconsin river system is stained with abundant aquatic
vegetation, submerged, emergent, and matted on the surface. Most of the
lake
seems to be about five to ten feet in depth, with just a few holes deeper
than 20 feet. There are several feeder rivers or streams, docks, and
bridges
with riprap and pilings. Evidently this is the home of numerous of
pleasure
craft there throughout the summer, so there's plenty of open water, but
large tracts of the lake are marked "hazardous" due to plentiful stumps.
So... whether or not you'll be there, if you were fishing the lake during
the day in late August, what would be your preference?
What size buzzbait should do best on Mohawksin in late August?
3/16-ounce
5/16-ounce
9/16-ounce
*** It all depends on what you're intending to win, the bass or the non-bass
catagory. I would say that the 5/16 would work well for the bass, but on
that crazy lake, I wouldn't rule out the 9/16 either. I've had smallies
that whacked muskie lures on numerous occasions. I know the muskie and pike
prefer the larger size.
What buzzbait models would work best for daytime fishing in that stained
water, over and through vegetation?
Wounded Minnow
White Shad
Chartreuse & White
Midnight Snack
***I grab two different ones, depending on my mood, either Midnight Snack or
Wounded Minnow.
What size spinnerbait would work best?
3/16-ounce
5/16-ounce
9/16-ounce
13/16-ounce
***If I had to limit it to one size, 5/16.
Which blade combination?
Tandem willowleaf
Double willowleaf
Single willowleaf
Double Colorado
Single Colorado
Tandem Indiana
Single Indiana
Tandem Turtleback (mag willow)
Single Turtleback
***Again, limiting to one combination, Tandem Turtleback.
What color main blade?
Gold
Nickel
Chartreuse
White
Red
***Probably gold turtleback for the main blade with a small chrome colorado.
Spinnerbait pattern (feel free to suggest a particular pattern)
Dark (e.g., Golden Shad, Midnight Snack, Rock Craw, Firetiger Perch)
Chartreuse mixes (e.g., Cht/blue back, Cht & White, Cht Shad, Green
Goddess,
Bluegill)
Light (White shad, Wht Shiner, Wounded Minnow)
Clearwaters (e.g.,k TN Shad, Citrus Shad, Baby Bass, Blue Shad)
***Again, depends on the day, but the patterns that have worked well for me
over the years have been Firetiger, Midnight Snack, Wounded Minnow and Baby
Bass.
