Was it hard to catch coarse fish?
What type of flies work well?

Not at all. Small white streamers for rudd can also get small pike.
"Maggot flies" made from glass beads can be used on carp. Algae flies and
anything else you can think of. I had 100 fish days on the Ouse. Do some
searching around, check out the www.flyanglersonline.com site and study your
fish. Find out what the coarse fishermen are using and find a fly that
immitates it. Most of all, have fun.
