Many modern hooks are merely coated with a varnish type finish. "Bronzed"
hooks used to have the finish burned in. "Black" hooks may have a special
finish, (i.e "Black Nickel", or just paint etc.

A good test is to rub a hook with a piece of cloth dipped in acetone ( Nail
varnish remover is just as good). If the colour comes off, it is merely
paint, if not it is some sort of "finish".

In the meantime there are many finishes being applied to hooks. Very few are
actually "bronzed" any more. Black salmon hooks were at one time "Japanned"
which gives them a tough black finish. Modern hooks are usually only
painted.

Regarding the choice of colour, I dont think it matters much, except that
for some patterns I prefer silver or other coloured hooks.
