Man you gotta broach eight pounds to need an eight weight for bass...

Depends on what you're fishing for them with...I've caught several around 5
pounds handily enough with a 5-weight, but that was casting Zonkers, Wooly
Buggers and Muddlers and sizes 6-12. When I start fishing bugs from the
heavy box (1/0 deer-hair mice and such) my comfort-level begins with a
7-weight and goes up a weight or two as the wind kicks up. A lighter rod
would handle the fish just as well, but it wouldn't effectively handle the
fly it takes to get us connected in the first place. If 2-pound bass are
looking for food in 1/0 and better sizes, there definitely is a reason to go
after them with an 8-weight. You can't catch them on something that won't
effectively cast what they're feeding on.
