I am going to be in Hood River, Oregon the end of August. I am going for a
wedding but figured I would try and get some fishing in while I am there.
Does anyone have any suggestions for places to go or gear(flies and
rod/reel combo) to take?
Thanks
Dan

Though there acceptable fishing in the Hood River itself, your best bet
would be to drive ~35 mi. East on I-84 to the mouth of the Deschutes, hike
1-2 mi. upstream, and commence fishing for summer run steelhead with a 7 or
8 weight rod of 9' more, a reel with a good drag, a floating line( with at
least 100yds of backing), and standard steelhead patterns such as Green Butt
Skunk, Purple Peril, Mack's Canyon, Coal Car, etc in size 4-6 at the end of
a 9' leader tapered to 1X. By the end of August there are usually healthy
numbers of steelhead there though you may have lots of company, especially
on weekends. Unless its overcast the best fishing will be early morning or
late afternoon - i.e.when sun is off the water.
