Fly rod build kit

Just ordered a build kit for a 2wt IM6 fly rod from Hook and Hackle. My
daughters gave me gift certificates. This will be my first attempt at
building a rod. Anybody got advice for a newbie at this?

Ed,
I break the assembly process down into three areas of concentration.
There is the mechanical/functional aspect - the right components and
getting everything lined up properly for example. There is the artistic
side - like thread color selection, adding trim rings to wraps, using
or not using color preserver on threads, and adding other
embellishments like feather inlays. Then there is the fit/finish side
- careful use of epoxies so they don't mar the appearance, not
scratching your blank while pre-fitting components and the quality
approach to thread wraps on guides and elsewhere, and the careful
application of thread wrap epoxy.
As you prepare to build your first rod think about these things. You
can build a highly functional, nicely appointed rod with good
fit/finish if you practice things like thread wrapping and thread epoxy
application before building the first rod. Study other rods for
appearance before starting your first build. This rod can be something
you are proud of for many years to come.
