Still a lot better than the 14mpg that my Ford F-150 gets.

That's funny, my wife says the exact same thing. ;-)

How much more gas would you use hauling a boat from Wisconsin
to Florida versus driving without a boat from Wisconsin to
Florida ? I was surprised when I actually recorded the mileage
on my Forester with and without a canoe on top. Without the
canoe I get about 28mpg highway, with the canoe on top about
25mpg. Significant difference.
