This morning @ 8:42 am I land a small 600# Bluefish Tuna on my new Winston
split cane rod. Good thing I opted for the 4 weight and not the 3 weight I
was eyeing first.
I am only guessing on the weight because all I finally got in was the head
which weighed near 200#s. A big shark got my fish because I might have
played it too long?
I was using the new Orvis fluorocarbon 6x tippet which is 47# test with a
12"x #6/0 barbless mackerel imitation. This new FC is the main reason for my
success in hooking the giant fish. I guess you all know by now that if you
don't use FC tippet you will never catch anything over 12" in fresh water
and 5 pounds in salt water.
I was lucky that I did fill my new 1.5 ounce 6" large arbor titanium 3 speed
reel with 500 yards of 10# Gel-spun backing. Lucky it had a drag that is a
combination of carbon fiber and Gore-tex blended with silicone extracts.
There is a small radiator inconveniently mounted on the side of the reel
that I think is necessary for fly fishers of my caliber but you guys will
never really need that option.
Conveniently, I was able to borrow some water skis from a person which
enabled me to follow the fish downstream for 17 miles where I beached it
near the confidence of the Sacramento river.
After CNN got down interviewing me I was life flighted in a military
helicopter to a restaurant were Dick Chaney and other were waiting to
congratulate me.
PS: If I was not the best fly caster that has ever lived I would not have
been able to make that 123' reach cast in the firs place.
Later today I will not be available for comment or autograph signings
because I will be in a hot tube in Argentina with some super models, unnamed
to protect their reputation.
