Actually, the 'experiment' was rigged. I placed the fly gently into the
water and the butt end popped up and floated the fly Reid-style (duck butt
fashion). If I dropped it from a few inches above the surface, the force
knocked enough air off the bubble so the fly would sink. So, no extra split
shot is needed in the field.
