Default Yesterday was a good day (for me)!

Yesterday was a VERY good day. It started when I got off duty at the
firehouse for the first of four days off. Gil called me and asked if I'd
show him that new smallie lake that I had such a good day on. We could even
use his boat and burn his gas! So I grabbed two rods, one baitcasting, one
spinning, a box of Senkos, a box of flukes, a box of hooks and two
spinnerbaits. One was a Midnight Snack, the other Bleeding Shad.

We arrived at the lake amidst scattered showers and winds gusting to 25 mph.
I backed him in and we started out on the trolling motor. I quickly tied on
the Midnight Snack and before Gil had his first lure tied on, I was into a
smallie! He had a crankbait tied on and was looking for Number 1 when I had
#2 on the Snack! At #3, I could see he was getting irritated with me. :-)

Smallie #4 came on a combination. He followed the Snack to the boat, but
veered off slowly. I quickly dropped a Senko over the side and it was
slammed! Frustrated, Gil now began to throw his Senko, and I went back to
the spinnerbait. Two more fish and he was fit to be tied!!!!

We worked a windy point and my spinnerbait was blown way off course and into
6" of water. Thinking I'd crank it into deeper water and let it flutter
down, I was amazed when I saw a torpedo scream through the water and slam
the spinnerbait! Smallie #7 jumped off at boatside.

I noticed that Gil was really frustrated by this point, and I cast a Senko
into deep water and began to talk to Gil. I noticed that in his
frustration, he was "working" the soft plastic. I was telling him that, and
(God, I love it when this happens) as the lure was falling into 18 feet of
water, I felt a pickup! I said, "Gil, you've got to do NOTHING with the
lure," and set the hook into #8!!!

It wasn't until I caught two more fish that he finally nailed one of his
own. I have to admit that he did get the largest, the first largemouth I've
ever seen on this lake, a nice 3 1/2 pound fish.

We had to leave shortly after that, because of my birthday, I knew that
Janet had plans for me. So I had a great birthday present from the Fish
Gods, and a great birthday overall.......
